CHAPTER 2 – THE SWARM

The non‑Euclidean panel before Rael did not flicker. Its intersecting geometric tracks held with absolute certainty, waiting for an input his hands were rapidly losing the density to provide. The taste of ozone thickened, bitter enough to feel like it was coating the back of his tongue as the air tightened around him — not with wind, but with a pressure that seemed to fold the space he occupied into something narrower, more conditional.

A low hum gathered beneath hearing until it settled behind his teeth, turning every breath into something that wanted to vibrate apart. Around the edge of the ascending hard‑light pillar, sapphire specks appeared where moments before there had been only empty air. At first they resembled drifting shards of fractured light, each no larger than a grain of sand. Then one flexed. Another unfolded. Tiny segmented bodies unfurled from impossible geometries, their translucent forms rippling as they drew themselves together along invisible gradients. They did not swarm. They assembled, every minute movement carrying them toward the same destination with quiet inevitability.

His hands.

The first touched his knuckles. No sting. No heat. Only an abrasive cold that scraped certainty from his skin, softening the outline of his fingers until they seemed faintly translucent — as though something was shaving away the agreement that held flesh together. More followed, each organism flowing with unsettling fluidity until the forward segment opened. Dense metallic jaws blossomed apart without hinges or teeth, formed from a dark, living substance that caught the arena’s light but reflected none of it. The impossible material flexed like muscle until it met resistance. Then, in the instant it found purchase against the unstable boundary of his hand, it became utterly rigid.

They were not feeding on him. They were feeding on what refused to settle.

The hesitation bleeding from his body drew them faster than movement ever could. They gathered wherever his outline wavered, their tiny jaws rasping soundlessly across the loose edges of his physical state. Wherever they passed, opacity fell away. His palms became ghostlike. The veins beneath dissolved into transparent geometry before quietly returning to nothing at all. The Arbiter watched without intervention, its crystalline body reflecting the shrinking coherence of Rael’s field as though observing a perfectly ordinary calibration.

The hard‑light pillar beneath him dimmed. At first he thought it was imagination. Then the edge beneath his boots lost its sharpness. The platform no longer felt completely solid. It felt… negotiable.

The Ion‑Gnathids had reached it.

Minute bodies spread across the luminous surface, their articulated jaws hardening against the pillar’s unstable harmonics. They did not consume the light. They pared away every fraction that failed to resolve cleanly, leaving gaps that widened beneath his weight. His balance shifted. Gravity hesitated. The platform no longer agreed entirely that he belonged upon it.

His heart stumbled.

The change was microscopic. The response was immediate.

The humming deepened as hundreds more sapphire bodies condensed from the ozone‑laden air. They unfolded almost delicately before converging on the fresh pulse of uncertainty radiating from his body. The arena wasn’t punishing fear. It was refusing indecision.

Rael drove his fading hand toward the waiting geometry. The numbness climbing his wrist no longer felt cold. It felt absent, as though pieces of him were quietly being edited from the world. His fingertips crossed the impossible lattice. The intersecting paths shifted. For the first time, the panel responded.

Behind him, the cloud stalled. Not retreating. Waiting. As though the smallest correction in his resonance had denied them their meal.

Then the platform lurched.

The entire pillar dropped. Heat slammed into him. Dust erupted upward. Below, the two sovereign beasts collided with enough force to fracture the arena floor, the molten titan driving its opponent through stone in an explosion that shook the chamber from foundation to vault. Above, the Arbiter’s containment lattice shimmered under the impact.

Rael wasn’t supposed to be here. Candidates watched from the upper tiers. They descended only when the arena called them. The sigils beneath his feet burned with a pattern he had never seen.

Selection. Immediate.

The molten titan turned. Its enormous head lifted from the ruin. Eyes like liquid furnaces fixed upon him.

The Arbiter spoke.

“Next challenger: Rael.”

The platform struck the combat floor.

There was no time left to think.

The beast charged.
